Lothian Thistle vs Peebles Rovers: Match Report

A trip to the capital ended in disappointment as table-topping Lothian Thistle bagged all three-points in a controversial and pulsating encounter at Saughton Enclosure

A Grant Munro header, 10 minutes from time, gave the Edinburgh outfit the win, and sees Rossi’s Rovers drop to 8th in the league.

The match kicked-off in typically cagey fashion, with very little between the two sides in the opening ten minutes as the two teams dipped their toes in the water.

Madness soon descended upon the game, as two Lothian players were handed their marching orders in one go following a horror tackle on Robbie Renwick and a shove in the face on Ger Rossi.

As Mackenzie and Muir departed the pitch, the Rovers knew they had a golden opportunity to pile some real pressure on 9-man Lothian.

But, the first-half was to yield little in an attacking-sense for Peebles as the combination of a poor pitch, stalwart defending from Lothian and personal sloppiness resulted in no significant progress being made in assaulting the home side’s goal.

HT: 0-0

The second-half ultimately proved to be a similar story as our cutting edge was dulled somewhat with the forced withdrawal of Alan McMath following a knee injury.

9-man Lothian were proving to be formidable opposition despite being two men down, and, ultimately, proved to be worthy of their hard-fought win.

Ben McGinley was kept busy between the posts, as he pulled of a string of impressive stops and saves to keep the score level.

His goalkeeping heroics were to continue after he saved a Guy penalty on 76 minutes. But, such heroics weren’t to last after Munro powered home an 81st minute header following a Lothian breakaway to hand Raymond Carr’s title chasing side three points on a frustrating afternoon for Peebles
